The staff is a simple weapon at first glance but it is a very physically demanding weapon. For a person to use this weapon proficiently they will need to be able to thing fast and precise. Staves are often called "The King of Weapons" because of the users ability to easily exploit weaknesses of other weapons.
For beginners you would want to start by picking a staff. Staves are most commonly made out of a hard oak, different spices of bamboo, and can be found made out of metals. The length on average for staves is about 6 feet. Once you have selected a staff you need to get use to the the balance of your staff by slowly swinging it for two or three days for an hour; if you wish you can start swinging faster as you get use to its balance. The staff will put strain on your arms, to avoid the strain you will need to do either basic or advanced arm workouts.

The four main styles of stave fighting are based of of four animals. Serpent, Ape, Tiger, Dragon.

The Dragon style is a style that relies on speed and power. You will start with your dominate leg out toward their opponent and your nun dominate behind their other leg. With the leg out foreword your toes will be pointing at your opponent and your back toes will be pointed at a slight angle. You would need your back to be strait to keep balance. A person who uses this style will want to make the first move in combat to surprises and put your opponent off balance. After your first move you will want to disarm the opponent and then go and end the fight.

Tiger style relies on the strength of the user and powerful, direct attacks to over power your opponent. Like the Dragon style you will stand with your dominant leg out toward your opponent and your other leg behind. Your front knee will have to be bent with your back leg straight, this is done to keep your balance. To start a fight you will wait for your opponent to make the first move. Once he/she has done that you will then want to hit them with a powerful attack to disorientate them, then finish your opponent after.
Ape style makes the user move around their opponent delivering power attacks. Your stance will be a wide stance with the legs in line past the width of your shoulders. With this stance you can move out of the way of your opponents attacks then counter attack with in a instant. The Ape is meant to tier your opponent and weaken them with power attacks aimed at their weak points.

This style was created by watching serpents fight and attack their prey. It is a style that focuses on fast and precise movements and attacks to end the fight fast. You'll want to put your main leg forward and the other be hind it. While in this stance put 80%-90% of your body weight on your back knee with your front foot barley touching the ground. You will want to watch your opponent until they began to strike, then hit them hard and fast to try and end the fight right there.
